Zone Equipment are local components within the Zone that provide heating, cooling, ventilation, or a combination of the three. The inputs that control each equipment type are specified in the Zone Equipment Inputs article. The results for each type are listed below.

Fan Coil Unit - Hydronic

  • Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The maximum volumetric airflow rate through the fan coil unit. This is also the design, rated airflow rate of the unit.

  • Outdoor Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: If the fan coil unit uses outdoor air, this field specifies the outdoor air volumetric flow rate.

  • Cooling Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI): The maximum capacity of the hydronic cooling coil.

  • Cooling Fluid Flow [GPM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The maximum chilled water volumetric flow rate through the unit’s cooling coil.

  • Cooling Entering/Leaving Air Temperature db/wb [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The entering and leaving air conditions of the sized coil.

  • Cooling Entering/Leaving Fluid Temperature [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The entering and leaving fluid temperature corresponding to the rated cooling capacity.

  • Heating Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The maximum capacity of the hydronic heating coil.

  • Heating Fluid Flow [GPM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The maximum hot water volumetric flow rate through the unit’s heating coil.

  • Heating Entering/Leaving Air Temperature db/wb [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet temperature of the air as it moved across the hydronic heating coil.

  • Heating Entering/Leaving Fluid Temperature [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet water temperature corresponding to the rated heating capacity.

Water to Air Heat Pump (WAHP)

  • Cooling Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The supply airflow rate leaving the heat pump when the DX cooling coil is operating.

  • Cooling Outdoor Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The outdoor airflow rate through the heat pump when the DX cooling coil is operating.

  • Total Cooling Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The gross cooling capacity of the heat pump.

  • Sensible Cooling Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The component of the total cooling capacity that is sensible.

  • Cooling Entering/Leaving Air Temperature db/wb [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet temperature of the air moving across the cooling coil.

  • Cooling Entering/Leaving Fluid Temperature [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet water temperature corresponding to the rated cooling capacity.

  • Heating Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The supply airflow rate through the heat pump when the DX heating coil is operating.

  • Total Heating Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The maximum gross heating capacity of the backup electric coil.

  • Heating Entering/Leaving Air Temperature db/wb [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet temperature of the air moving across the backup heating coil.

Packaged Terminal Heat Pump (PTHP)

  • Cooling Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The supply airflow rate leaving the heat pump when the DX cooling coil is operating.

  • Cooling Outdoor Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The outdoor airflow rate through the heat pump when the DX cooling coil is operating.

  • Total Cooling Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The gross cooling capacity of the heat pump.

  • Sensible Cooling Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The component of the total cooling capacity that is sensible.

  • Exhaust Air Flow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The exhaust air flow rate through the ERV unit in cubic meters per second at standard temperature and pressure

Radiant Cooling Panel

  • Sensible Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The cooling panel unit nominal sensible cooling capacity at the rated flow rate of water through the unit.

  • Fluid Flow [GPM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The maximum chilled water volumetric flow rate.

Baseboard Heater - Hydronic

  • Total Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The radiant-convective water baseboard rated capacity at the rated water mass flow rate.

  • Fluid Flow [GPM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The maximum heated water volumetric flow rate.

Baseboard Heater - Electric

  • Total Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The heating capacity of the electric coil at the rated inlet and outlet air temperatures.

Unit Heater - Electric

  • Total Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The heating capacity of the electric coil at the rated inlet and outlet air temperatures.

  • Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The full load air volumetric flow rate at standard temperature and pressure.

  • Heating Entering/Leaving Air Temperature db/wb [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet air temperature corresponding to the rated heating capacity.

Unit Heater - Hydronic

  • Total Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The heating capacity of the coil at the rated inlet and outlet air and water temperatures.

  • Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The full load air volumetric flow rate.

  • Fluid Flow [GPM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The maximum heated water volumetric flow rate through the coil.

  • Heating Entering/Leaving Air Temperature db/wb [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet air temperature corresponding to the rated heating capacity.

  • Heating Entering/Leaving Fluid Temperature [°F (IP) | °C (SI)]: The inlet/outlet water temperature corresponding to the rated heating capacity.

Variable Refrigerant Flow Unit (VRF)

  • Cooling Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The supply airflow rate leaving the unit during cooling.

  • Heating Supply Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The supply airflow rate leaving the unit during heating.

  • Outdoor Airflow [CFM (IP) | L/S (SI)]: The outdoor airflow rate.

  • Cooling Coil Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The capacity of the coil in cooling operation.

  • Total Heating Capacity [Btu/h (IP) | Watts (SI)]: The capacity of the coil in heating operation

Note: EnergyPlus only sizes the Cooling Coils for VRF units. The Heating Coil Capacity and Air Flow is then set equal to the Cooling Coil. Recommendation for sizing of the heating requirements for the VRF units is to use the Zone Heating Peak Load values.
